I figured I would start a feature to highlight exactly what it is I’m rocking out to on whatever day it is. It’s really just an excuse to share YouTube clips and other items that may come up.
On Black Friday in 2008, Jdimytai Damour, a temporary worker at a Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, New York, was trampled to death when a “shrieking mob surged through in a blind rush for holiday bargains.” Damour “was thrown back onto the black linoleum tiles and trampled in the stampede that streamed over and around him.” He died in hospital within the hour, but there sure were some good sales that day.
AlterNet’s Lauren Kelly has more stories. As for me, I’m not trying to tell you what to do with the day after American Thanksgiving. But there is a planned strike at Wal-Mart, its first strike in 50 years, and those who work for the richest family on the planet deserve better treatment and better pay.
There is also an interesting juxtaposition going on with the line-ups for video game systems and flatscreens and the “shelter line stretchin’ round the corner.” Maybe that’s something to think about. Maybe not.
